MOVING DATA

Animated data visualization addressing Violence Against Women & Girls (click to play)

PROJECT BRIEF

The goal of the project was to create a motion graphic to address one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The motion graphic had to use data visualization to explain the significance of the issue and how/why it should be solved. The design, including graphics, typography, animation, and sound, should be thoughtfully executed to present appealing and effective information.

IDEATION

I knew I wanted my topic to be human centric in order to challenge myself to create data visualization that was as emotive as informative. By focusing on a humanistic approach to data, it increases impact on the audience, driving them to consider the issue and desire to help solve it.

I decided to choose Goal 5: Gender Equality and focus specifically on Violence Against Women & Girls. I then determined that the information would be primarily about domestic abuse because it is a prevalent issue that is often unreported. It is also a timely issue as there has been an increase in domestic abuse cases since the COVID-19 pandemic.

CONCEPT

My concept was to illustrate the brutality of domestic violence against females by collaging humanistic, organic forms with harsh geometric shapes.

I utilized imagery of dismembered body parts to symbolize separating a victim’s body from their humanity, as well as allude to how female’s rights and equality are often unrecognized.

STYLIZATION

Stylistic elements were rooted in the concept: organic shapes of body parts cut from magazines to represent females contrasted by bold geometric shapes to symbolize violence. Organic linework was also added to provide another humanistic and emotive element, as well as help determine the pacing and tie the scenes together. A minimal style and color scheme was implemented to focus on the message and imagery of the human body.

RESULTS

Considering the seriousness of the topic, the visuals look mature and elegant while still invoking discomfort in the viewer. The impact of the imagery contributes to the idea that there is a stigma which surrounds Violence Against Women & Girls that prevents society from addressing it. The data is designed to display accurate, clear, and consise information while also being curated to exhibit a consistent and impactful stylization.
