NEVER LET ME GO

Experimental portrait adapted to create a book cover for the novel Never Let Me Go

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The goal of this project was to create an unconventional book cover that conveyed the genre and mood of the story, as well as captured the attention of potential readers.

This project began as an experimental portrait exploring the juxtaposition of nature and medical technology. The portrait was then repurposed to create a book cover for the dystopian science fiction novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro.

The plot of Never Let Me Go follows a girl named Kathy as she grows up in an idyllic boarding school in the English countryside. After discovering that the purpose of the school is to raise children to become organ donors, Kathy is confronted with feelings of love, confusion, and betrayal.

I utilized the cut-out of an anatomical heart to reveal the portrait underneath to allude to both the sci-fi and love story genres of the novel. The balance of delicate details contrasted by the sterile white color express the novel’s thought to moral implications in human nature and scientific advancement.
